COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES FOR AIRCRAFT ENGINES IS IN TURKEY WITH TEI


TEI, towards becoming a complete engine manufacturer, signed an agreement with its partner GE in 2009 to acquire the blisk-spool manufacturing technology.

The integral pale-disc and disc groups (blisk and spool) manufacturing project is being accomplished with the latest manufacturing technologies in the global aerospace industry and TEI is fast becoming among the few companies in this industry to possess this technology. Using advanced manufacturing methods and high technology, the next generation integral pale and disc groups, while reducing heavy and toxic emissions to a great extent, provides high performance together with fuel savings.

Within this project’s coverage, behind the engine that will provide power to the F-136 JSF, the GEnx engine in the Boeing 787/747-8 airplanes; the LMS100 used in frigates and related industry; the CF6 engines in Airbus 300/310/330 and Boeing 747/767, is the production of seven different integral pale and disc and disc groups planned to be realized by TEI.

Between 2010 and 2021, the project is expected to have a work volume of 511 million dollars, and while TEI will continue with the manufacture of military and commercial engines, it will also be in the position to apply this advanced technology to air, land and sea platforms.

Today TEI is the only supplier chosen in the manufacture of integral pale and discs group under the continuing cooperation between GE and Rolls-Royce. With this manufacturing method, where pale and discs are processed from a single forged piece, important advantages are obtained in weight and resistance.

FIRST IN TURKEY

Indicating that the manufacture of integral pale and disc and disc groups (blisk and spool) using high technology for aircraft engine compressors did not previously exist at TEI and in our country and that it was only applied by 5 or 6 main engine manufacturers in the world, TEI General Manager Mr. Ak?n Duman emphasized that as a result of the transfer of blisk and spool manufacturing technology, as one of the most advanced technologies in the aviation industry, the TEI, with the agreement signed with GE, becomes the only or the principal source in the world for these parts. Conscious of the fact that the continuity of the companies in the aviation industry rests on competitiveness, reliability and success in the start-up of a new product, Mr. Duman stated that TEI continues with its investments and that it uses its high technology applications to create a competitive advantage. Mr. Duman also added that the financial support provided by the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries for the project is of utmost importance for our country in reaching a higher performance in the aviation industry and in terms of the sustainability of the performance reached.

WHAT IS BLISK?

Blisk (bladed integrated disc) is the integrated manufacture of disc and pale used in turbine engines utilizing advanced manufacturing methods. The weight advantages it provides and its manufacture with less compressor stages at the same pressure ratio by reducing surface air resistance to the minimum, increases aerodynamic performance and fuel savings, thus increasing the use of blisk in aircraft engines. The use of blisk provides a 15 percent saving in fuel consumption in GEnx engines and assists below a 95 percent performance in emission values allowed by law.

The GEnx is the future engine that provides the power behind the Boeing 747-8 and the 787 Dreamliner and the engine that will carry these airplanes to the future. The 747-8 that uses four GEnx engines is a third generation jumbo jet and, as well as being the largest plane manufactured by the United States, is the longest commercial airplane in the world. The long range, mid-size and wide body class 787 Dreamliner that has two GEnx engines became the airplane to receive the fastest orders in aviation history after the project was disclosed. Boeing, describing the 787 Dreamliner as the most thrifty fuel consuming airplane it has built, has already received a total of 847 purchase orders.

KOÇ Information and Defence Technologies Earns the Right to CMMI v1.2 Maturity Level 5
Koç Bilgi ve Savunma Teknolojileri A.?. (KBS), was founded with the purpose of presenting national solutions to the critical technologies required by the defence industry utilizing the sixty years of technological accumulation of the Koç Information Group.

In all the projects KBS has undertaken or participated, based on the principle of, “Creating a value for our customers and responding to our customers’ expectations with quality and stability,” KBS has focused on customer satisfaction at the highest level.

In order to realize this objective, converting the precondition of corporate knowledge formed within KBS into a company asset was considered as a strong process and a metric infrastructure, and in order to reach this target, activities based on the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) methodology were continued within the company. The infrastructure process formed under this coverage was subject to a CMMI appraisal on 28 August 2007 that is widely used worldwide and which measures the level of maturity of corporations - in other words, how well they undertook their work - and as a result of this appraisal, KBS earned the right to CMMI Level 3.

Since 2007, KBS has achieved many gains in completing the maturity phases of these processes; expanding the accumulation in project expertise; collecting and evaluating corporate data at the organizational level and obtaining project feedback from these evaluations and thereby increasing project productivity. Within this coverage, by targeting continuous development and in order to obtain larger responsibilities in higher value added projects in the defence industry, the objective of attaining CMMI Level 5 was set in renewing document work commencing approximately one year ago.

As a result of the work conducted with this purpose in mind, the appraisal realized between 26 April and 4 May of this year was successfully completed and KBS’s maturity level was designated as:

“CMMI v. 1.2 Maturity Level 5 “Design, Development, Application and Maintenance in System Engineering” which includes software and hardware engineering
