MKE 127 mm Naval Gun Underway: Test Firing Conducted with the MKE-Produced 127 mm Naval Gun Barrel

Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE) continues to develop advanced, high‑technology defence solutions aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of modern armed forces. Building on the experience gained from the production of the 76 mm national naval gun, MKE has taken its vision one step further and reached a critical milestone in the development of the 127 mm national naval gun. As part of the acceptance procedure, the 127 mm/54 caliber national naval gun barrel produced by MKE was integrated into the weapon system installed on the TCG Fatih Frigate and successfully completed its test firings.

In line with the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces and with the goal of indigenization projects and ending foreign dependency, MKE, which produced the 76 mm naval gun as the first step, will also manufacture the naval gun weapon system into which the 127 mm barrel will be integrated. MKE engineers continue their R&D efforts on the production of the 127 mm national naval gun weapon system without slowing down. With the 127 mm naval gun weapon system to be produced using domestic and national resources, Türkiye will become one of the few countries in the world capable of producing this system.

Manufactured at MKE’s Heavy Weapons Factory, the 127 mm naval gun barrel goes through several critical stages before becoming ready for integration. The raw steel arriving at the factory first undergoes a peeling process, during which oxide layers on the outer surface are removed. The boring operation then begins. After a heat treatment applied to enhance material strength, the bore diameter is gradually expanded.

Once rifling is completed, the inner surface of the 127 mm barrel is chrome-plated under high pressure to protect the bore surface and extend barrel life. The high-strength raw steel, originally weighing 5,300 kg and measuring 8 meters, is transformed through these processes into a 1,628 kg, 6,858 mm-long 127 mm naval gun barrel, ready for integration into the weapon system.
